Rare Earth Elements

Rare Earth Elements (REE) are a group of 17 chemically similar elements that are found in the periodic table. This group includes the 15 lanthanides, ranging from lanthanum (La) to lutetium (Lu), as well as scandium (Sc) and yttrium (Y). These elements are known for their unique electronic, optical, and magnetic properties, which make them crucial in various high-tech applications. Rare Earth Elements are essential in the manufacturing of products such as smartphones, electric vehicles, renewable energy technologies (like wind turbines), and advanced military equipment. Despite their name, REEs are not particularly rare in terms of abundance in the Earth’s crust, but they are often difficult and costly to extract due to their dispersed nature and the complexity of mining processes. The geopolitical landscape surrounding REEs is significant, as certain countries, particularly China, dominate the production and supply chains for these elements, raising concerns over resource security and environmental impacts of mining.
